Combo: safe, fun and stylish

There’s no doubt: your interior would look a lot different with or without children. We’re all familiar with the picture of Lego bricks, puzzle pieces and books strewn all over the floor. So, does having kids mean saying goodbye to a sleek, well-kept interior? Of course it doesn’t! This article gives you a number of valuable tips for tackling every space in your home and garden to create an interior that is not only safe and fun for children, but which is also very stylish.

If you sell items for children yourself, we know that this blogpost will give you the inspiration you need to add items to your range, as well as to support (future) parents with the right advice and inspiration.
Living room

Storage space is key. Especially when there are kids around. Provide extra storage space in the living room where your little ones play – somewhere you can quickly put away all of the toys they leave lying around. It might be in a drawer unit with baskets and wooden trays, or maybe large freestanding wicker baskets, or a chest (on castors), etc.

There are even beanbags that you can stuff with toys! That’s a win-win, because after they’ve finished playing, your kids can put everything inside the beanbag and then sit on it to enjoy screen time or reading a book.

The thing about many toys is that they are often in the brightest colours that don’t really fit into your interior. So look for toys in soft, warm colours that reflect your interior more, such as wooden toys. Toys that look strong and durable can make the place look unique and playful. Toys in silicone are also very popular at the moment: rainbows to put together, blocks to stack and so on. Place them on a cabinet or in a corner as a fun eye-catcher.

What are the educational toy trends for 2022? The Wobbel balance board and stacking stones are favourites your child will have fun with for hours.

The Wobbel board comes in a range of colours and helps to build balance and strength. The stacking stones are multifunctional and can be used to sit on, as well as for exercise and thinking up creative solutions. Both items are a real hit this year and also look very good in your interior.

If you want to keep the play space and living room separate, why not create a cosy kids’ corner where they can enjoy themselves to their heart’s content. Set up a table with little chairs, a teepee, put some shelves or a blackboard on the wall, add a string of lights, etc. Make it a space that’s both inviting to play in and also looks good. You’ll find ideas for fitting out the children’s room in our article “The leading kids’ room trends for 2022.”

Kitchen

Kitchens are often seen as a place full of hazards for children. You’re in there working with sharp knives, boiling water, hot oil, etc. All things that aren’t very child-friendly. But you can change that. In fact there are a number of basic rules that should be applied to every room in the house: make plug points safe, protect any sharp corners on furniture and use child locks to secure doors and cupboards where you keep things you don’t want the kids to get hold of.

How do you keep an eye on your child when you’re busy in the kitchen? Have him or her help you with the cooking, or give them some easy kitchen chores to do.

Children love helping their parents and this way, plus you have more control. A learning tower is an absolute must-have in the kitchen. Your pride and joy can climb on it and have a good view of the worktop or kitchen table while still standing safely. And some learning towers can be converted into a low chair and table.

"Young chefs can help you with all sorts of things in the kitchen. They can get started with a whisk, rolling pin or mixer. In fact there are even rolling pins with patterns on, which is great for making biscuits. Of course, children also love working with cookie-cutters, which come in all shapes and sizes. And if your little one has a passion for a particular animal or a hobby, you’re sure to find the shape you want! Combine them with a fun apron and your sous-chef is ready to shine in the kitchen. "

Bathroom

Be careful about what you leave within the reach of your children in the bathroom. Make sure you have a mirrored cabinet or shelves on the wall where you can keep glass bottles, scissors, medication, etc. You can put plastic tubes and containers, bath toys and wash mitts that your child is allowed to have in baskets on the edge of the bath. Use a booster step so that when your children are small, they can still reach the basin.

Buy a nonslip mat to put in the bath. And make sure the tap is protected to prevent your children from being sprayed with hot water. With young children and babies, always check the water temperature beforehand. And you can already hear us telling you that there are fun bath thermometers in every shape and colour!

Not all children enjoy bath-time. So make it fun by having the right toys on hand. Toys that squirt water and float remain popular, while stickers and little figures that you can attach to the side of the bath are on the rise.

Want to give your bathroom that extra personal touch?

Hang a row of nice bathrobes up for the whole family, or give your children a toothbrush in their favourite colour, or have a cheerful laundry basket in there, etc. That’ll make it more fun for the kids to help with the laundry, too!

Garden

As soon as the weather’s fine enough, it’s very healthy for the little ones to go outside to play. Sometimes, though, they’ll use the excuse of preferring to stay indoors to play with their toys. No problem – simply take their toys outside! Spread a nice blanket out on the ground and you’re ready to go. Make the outdoor play area really attractive and you’ll soon see your kids wanting to play outside more often.

What about toys designed specifically to be outside? Like toys for the sandpit, water pistols, etc. Store them outside in a storage chest (or in the garage).

Just as they do in the kitchen, children also like to lend a hand with the gardening. Give them a little gardener’s set so that they can help you plant seeds, do the weeding, feed the chickens, etc. Watering flowers and plants is also the perfect job for the kids. And if they can’t manage the garden hose, give them a watering can to go and enjoy themselves with.

And as a parent, of course, you also want somewhere in your garden where you can go and relax. Position your recliner so that you can keep an eye on the bigger toys such as the swing, slide and trampoline.

If you have a terrace, it’s preferable to install nonslip boards so that accidents can be prevented if it has rained (of if your little darling has watered the shrubs a bit too enthusiastically…).

For your garden furniture, we recommend you give preference to sturdy materials and darker colours (especially for the cushions!). That way, it’s a little less of a drama if something gets spilled. When eating outdoors, make sure that the table and chairs are in the shade, maybe under a pergola. It’ll make sitting outside a little more pleasant when the weather’s really hot. And you can cosy up a pergola for the evenings with a string of lights and lanterns. Blissful summer evenings guaranteed!
